SMART WETLANDS

By Mark Noon

By using "Chlorophyl-a" satellite imagery we can estimate how much algal bloom is contained in the different zones of the lake without taking manual measurements.

More algae means the water quality in those areas is degraded and the amount of phosphorus, nitrogen and other pollutants is high enough to provide nutrients to the algae.

As part of the modular and parametric design inspired by water lilies, we start with two types of cleaning platforms:

1. The DOCK platforms serve as the initial medium for the satellite data - they obtain the imagery from the satellite and travel to the area which is the most polluted, then they communicate directions and paths to the WORKER platforms so they can travel by the dirty areas until finally reaching the dock, staying there for a while and traveling back to coast.

2. The WORKER platforms can carry people from the coast and transport them to the DOCK, while purifying the water as they move and providing a unique experience to the visitors.

The platforms not only provide passive water filtering,
they also provide a unique architectural experience to the visitors with two levels of walkable space and panoramic views of the lake's waterline and underwater experience - seeing other platforms move and the effect they produce on the lake.

As you approach the lower level entrance of the dock you will notice different exhibits and information describing lake Nalban history and humanity's progress in the field of water purification and passive energy thus acting as a museum.

CLEANING PATHS

All the movement occurs in realtime according to the data derived from the satellite to the DOCK.
The DOCK moves slowly when there is a change in the dirtiest zones, updating the WORKERS on the path they should take in order to reach it and pass through the relevant zones.
Platforms with people move in faster cycles than platforms without and they are synchronized, so people from the DOCK can return to the coast at any point.

In conclusion, the project aims to create a unique and vivid experience which changes dynamically according to changing parameters - the satellite pollution map.

The visitors will experience different paths and angles every time they visit the lake as the Chlorophyll-a changes overtime.

POSSIBLE VARIATIONS

As the method of "Agent Based Design" was chosen, it is possible to alter the behavior of the agent so they move differently while the parameters for Separation, Flocking , and Distance change.
